See Salvage Auction Photos by VIN

If a car was wrecked, flooded or totaled, it usually went through a Copart or IAA salvage auction first, and the auction photographed it. Enter the VIN to see whether those records exist.

Type the 17-character VIN or snap a photo of it — door jamb, dashboard or registration

Free preview shows whether auction records exist. Full report with photos: $8.99.

How often cars have auction history

Of the 289 reports our customers ran in September and October 2026, 43 had salvage auction records, about 1 in 7 cars, and 36 of those included the auction photos.

What the auction record shows

AuctionCopart or IAA, with the lot number and sale location
Sale dateWhen the car went through the auction
DamagePrimary and secondary damage as the auction listed it (front end, flood, hail, rollover…)
Odometer at saleThe reading on the day of the auction, plus any odometer brand
Title at saleThe title or document type the car was sold on, e.g. salvage certificate
KeysWhether the keys came with the car
PhotosThe auction's own photos of the car as it arrived, before any repair

Why the photos matter

A repaired car can look perfect on the lot. The auction photos show it the way the insurer sold it: crushed front ends, deployed airbags, a water line on the seats. That tells you how much work went into the repair, and whether the price makes sense.

What to look for in auction photos

  • Airbags deployed. Means a serious impact, and the airbags, seat belt pretensioners and sensors all had to be replaced.
  • Damage near the pillars or roof. Points to structural repair, so have a body shop measure the frame.
  • Water lines or mud inside. Flood cars develop electrical problems months later.
  • Odometer photo. Compare the reading with what the seller claims today.

Questions

Can I see Copart or IAA auction photos by VIN?

Yes. If the car was sold at a Copart or IAA salvage auction, the VinItel report shows the auction listing with its photos, sale date, damage type and odometer at sale. The free preview tells you whether auction records exist before you pay.

Why does a car with a clean title have salvage auction records?

Insurers sell total losses at salvage auctions, and some states only brand a title above a damage threshold or not at all for certain damage. A car can also be re-titled in another state, which can remove the brand. The auction record stays.

Are auction photos included in the $8.99 report?

Yes. Every VinItel report includes salvage auction records and photos when they exist for that VIN. There is no separate fee.
