What Is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number is a unique 17-character code assigned to every motor vehicle at the time of manufacture. Introduced in 1981 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the VIN serves as a vehicle's fingerprint — no two active vehicles share the same VIN. Each character in the sequence encodes specific information about the vehicle's origin, attributes, and production details.

Understanding Each Section

  • Positions 1-3 (WMI):The World Manufacturer Identifier tells you which country the vehicle was built in (position 1), who manufactured it (position 2), and the vehicle type or manufacturing division (position 3). For example, "1HG" indicates a Honda passenger car built in the United States.
  • Positions 4-8 (VDS):The Vehicle Descriptor Section encodes the vehicle's model, body type, engine type, restraint system, and transmission. These five characters are defined by each manufacturer according to their own system.
  • Position 9 (Check Digit): A mathematically calculated digit used to verify the VIN is not fraudulent. This is the single most important anti-fraud feature of the VIN system.
  • Position 10 (Model Year):Encodes the vehicle's model year using a letter or number. For example, "A" = 2010, "B" = 2011, through "Y" = 2000 (skipping I, O, Q, U, Z, and 0).
  • Position 11 (Assembly Plant): Identifies the specific factory where the vehicle was assembled. Each manufacturer assigns its own plant codes.
  • Positions 12-17 (Sequence Number): A unique serial number assigned to each vehicle as it rolls off the assembly line. This is what distinguishes one specific vehicle from another of the same make, model, and year.

VIN Decoder FAQ

Common questions about decoding Vehicle Identification Numbers.

What is a VIN and why does it matter?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle manufactured since 1981. It acts as a vehicle's fingerprint — no two vehicles in operation share the same VIN. The VIN encodes information about the manufacturer, vehicle attributes, model year, assembly plant, and production sequence. Decoding a VIN is the first step in understanding exactly what a vehicle is before you check its history.

Where can I find the VIN on a vehicle?

The VIN is located in several places on every vehicle. The most common location is on the driver's side dashboard, visible through the windshield at the lower-left corner. You can also find it on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb, on your vehicle registration card, on your insurance documents, and on the vehicle title. For motorcycles, check the steering neck or the frame near the engine.

Is VIN decoding free?

Yes, VIN decoding is completely free on VinItel. You can decode any VIN to reveal the vehicle's year, make, model, engine, transmission, country of origin, and full specifications at no cost. If you want to go further and check the vehicle's history — including accidents, title brands, odometer records, and theft status — you can purchase a comprehensive VIN report starting at $4.99.

What if my VIN is invalid or returns no results?

If a VIN returns no results, first double-check that you entered all 17 characters correctly. VINs never contain the letters I, O, or Q to avoid confusion with the numbers 1, 0, and 9. If the VIN is pre-1981, it may be fewer than 17 characters and our decoder may not support it. For valid modern VINs, our database covers over 25 million records across 20+ data sources. If your VIN still returns no results, contact our support team and we will investigate.
