Data Provenance & Trust
VinItel is a data aggregator. Title and ownership history comes from NMVTIS-approved data providers (the DOJ-authorized companies that report into the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System). Recalls, complaints, safety ratings, and VIN decode come directly from the public NHTSA databases. We unify, enrich, and analyze these feeds into a single report.
We are not an NMVTIS-approved provider ourselves, and we are not the originating government agency. We purchase access to data from providers that ARE approved, and we aggregate free public NHTSA data. For the official government record, go directly to vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov or NHTSA.gov.
Title history & accident data is sourced from NMVTIS-approved providers we license, including:
- AutoCheck (Experian) — NMVTIS-approved consumer access provider
- Additional licensed title data partners
Full list of NMVTIS-approved providers at vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov
- NHTSA Recalls Database (manufacturer recall campaigns)
- NHTSA ODI Consumer Complaints (2.2M+ owner reports, 1995–present)
- NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings (crash & rollover tests)
- NHTSA vPIC VIN Decoder (official vehicle specifications)
- Auto auction and market pricing feeds (retail & trade-in values)
16.2M+ decoded US vehicle records across 1,200+ models, reindexed every 6 hours. Statistics are computed from real title records and claims — not surveys, estimates, or owner polling.
NMVTIS title data refreshes continuously from state DMV partners. NHTSA flat files (complaints & recalls) are imported weekly. Per-VIN recalls and safety ratings are fetched live from NHTSA APIs on every report request.
Official Sources
You can verify VinItel's data by cross-referencing with these government sources:
What Our Reports Cover
NMVTIS title records: salvage, junk, flood, rebuilt, and lemon brands.
Accident history: reported crashes and total-loss events from insurance and state records.
Odometer history: readings over time, with rollback detection.
Ownership history: number of prior owners, state-by-state title transfers.
Open recalls: live from NHTSA per-VIN, with defect summary and remedy.
Safety ratings: 5-Star NHTSA crash & rollover ratings for the specific model.
Market value: retail and trade-in estimates from current auction data.
Lien & theft: active liens and theft reports where available.
Honest Limitations
NHTSA complaints are owner-submitted safety reports, not verified defects. Luxury and high-income brand owners are less likely to file (they handle issues at the dealer), which means mass-market brands look disproportionately worse in raw complaint counts.
We focus on model + year level data where the signal is strongest — a 2×+ spike for a specific model year indicates a real manufacturing issue regardless of reporting bias.
NMVTIS does not include every title event in every state — coverage varies by state reporting compliance. Our reports indicate when records are unavailable rather than silently omitting them.
